Process Engineer

Location: Wabash, Indiana - United States

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The manufacturing process engineer ensures the end product meets customer needs. This position is responsible for initiating and implementing technical improvements, preventing and resolving technical problems, and assessing the capabilities of the processes. The process engineer will provide all aspects of technical leadership in the improvement of manufacturing processes, manufacturing equipment efficiencies, and product quality.

Reports to: Operations/Technical Leader

Span of Control: No direct reports

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides leadership and project management to improve product quality, equipment uptime, and line utilization at the Wabash plant.

  • .Utilize Root Cause Analysis methods to problem solve process issues and increase equipment reliability, process capability, and improve product quality.
  • Identifying, understanding, and teaching others the Critical Product Characteristics required to provide our customers with a quality product
  • Developing and implementing procedures and systems to ensure products consistently meet or exceed customer expectations
  • Supporting experiments or trials for new and existing products to ensure they meet customer’s fitness for use
  • Apply sound engineering practices towards the completion of improvement projects.

Provides project management to capital projects to ensure on-time and on-budget completion.

  • Oversee contract requirements and ensure contractor work is being performed in proper manner.
  • Apply sound engineering practices towards the completion of improvement projects.
  • Monitor projects for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices.

Provides leadership to Process Improvement and Process Control activities and projects

  • Conducting process audits to review Critical Product Characteristics and Critical Process Variables and implementing sustainable corrective actions for process shifts or upsets
  • Determining process consistency and capability (Cpk)
  • Implementing control charting schemes for Critical Process Variables based on ISBMS and S&T specifications
  • Developing and implementing Operator Control Plans to ensure that all products meet specifications at the lowest cost
  • Identifying and eliminating common causes of product and process variation (troubleshooting)
  • Analyzing product and process data, providing feedback and making recommendations to optimize performance
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements and best practices. Improvements may originate from S&T, ISBMS, or other facilities
  • Implementing corrective actions for issues surfaced through quality complaints and hold tags
  • Coaching, counseling, and training all employees on process control
  • Establishing processes for all critical tasks and audit for adherence and compliance
  • Partner with maintenance to resolve equipment issues
  • Identifying and requesting capital funding for equipment, modifications, etc.

Coaches, trains, mentors and provides leadership to equipment operators, maintenance technicians, and production technicians on the manufacturing process and process control procedures.

  • Educating primary employees in the manufacturing process and process control procedures
  • Partnering with employees to develop and implement Operator Control Plans
  • Partnering with Maintenance to develop and implement Total Productive Maintenance plans for equipment to ensure employee understanding and ownership
  • Partnering with our Product Technical Leaders to develop Product Specifications that are achievable and capable in the manufacturing environment.
  • Partnering with our Product Stewards to ensure all BOM and raw materials match the manufacturing specifications, raw material specifications and are tied back to our internal cost standards.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
  • Six Sigma and Lean training and experience
  • 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment

EXPERIENCE:

  • Background in continuous manufacturing preferred
  • Leadership experience in a matrix environment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • General knowledge of glass melting technologies, glass chemistry, batch operations, binder operations and processes preferred.
  • General knowledge of Root Cause Failure Analysis or equivalent process.
  • Knowledge and experience in project management including writing scope and cost estimates, contractor bid packages, and preparing Capital Appropriation Requests for approval.
  • Ability to evaluate vendor proposals
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and lead multi-functional teams to achieve plant objectives.
  • Strong listening and comprehension skills.
  • Strong at managing projects through completion.
  • Ability to lead change through influence and without having direct line leadership of the team.
  • Strong problem solving skills to quickly assess situations, develop appropriate solutions, and manage execution.
  • Utilizing data and data collection systems, and Six Sigma methods for problem-solving and decision-making to eliminate manufacturing losses and unnecessary costs.
  • Able to create and implement strategic and operations plans.
  • Effective with verbal and written communication.
  • Business and Financial acumen to understand the drivers of success and how they interact.
  • External perspective and understands that all business opportunities start with knowledge of how to create value for customer.
  • Strong planning, resourcing and delegation skills.
  • Able to achieve results fast both individually and through teams.

Able to utilize OC systems and the necessary software.
