Product Research Scientist

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Product Research Scientist is accountable for the design, coordination and execution of ethnographic, qualitative, and quantitative research methods to define end-user needs and the technical requirements necessary to drive Owens Corning’s Residential, Commercial and Industrial Insulation business. Provides leadership and expertise to translate end-user needs into effective product designs and end-user driven innovation strategies. Guides new product concepts as well as specifications to optimize the function, value and appearance of fiberglass-based products and systems for the mutual benefit of the end-user and the manufacturer. This position works closely with Product Managers, R&D, and Manufacturing.

Reports to: Product Research Leader (R&D)

Superior Understanding of End-User habits, choices and unarticulated needs
- Identifies, understands and models the habits, choices and unarticulated needs of both our customers and end-users.
- Translates customer and end-user needs into winning product development strategies including new and improved product manufacturing practices leading to superior product performance.
- Drives innovative products and performance claims to the marketplace.
Guides the development of products of superior quality and unmatched performance
- Identifies the key physical properties and performance attributes driving End-User preferences, choices and satisfaction in the context of fiberglass-based insulation products
- Deeply understands the fundamentals of Industrial Design and Rapid Prototyping, and translate these into superior quality and differentiated product performance.
- Reapplies Experience Design fundamentals to develop customer-relevant demos, differentiated product claims and robust claims support strategies.
- Defines, develops, and delivers differentiated concepts and products with demonstrated End-User preference and choice.
- Defines and develops market-differentiating claims, robust claim support strategies, customer-relevant and compelling product performance demos.
Execute project leadership on programs
- Leads projects from concept through to commercialization, for large cross-functional teams, and ensuring consistent alignment with the business strategy throughout the project. Projects to be managed through Stage Gate processes.
- Integrates technical and commercial capabilities to drive innovation. Implement disciplined, transparent and focused approaches to solve problems through science and technology fundamentals.
- Demonstrates the ability to define and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization, and to technically lead the development of solutions.
- Leads projects to ensure on-time and on-budget delivery.
- Implements all projects deliverables in alignment with customer and business requirements
- M.S. in Applied Anthropology or Industrial Design OR B.S. in Engineering or Scientific field with 3-5 years of relevant experience.
- 3-5 years of experience planning and conducting ethnographic fieldwork, qualitative research, and quantitative research. Experience with diverse data collection methods such as participant-observation, semi-structured interviewing, audiovisual techniques and survey methods.
- Ability to travel up to 35%
- Hands-on experience in the areas of industrial design, product design, or design anthropology is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated project management effectiveness in R&D and/or Manufacturing environments is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated track record of project leadership from concept to commercialization of large cross-functional teams is preferred.
